IT IS JUST ALWAYS ABOUT THE PRIVILEGED PEOPLE AND IT’S SHIT

like people receive death threats all the fucking time on this website and on so many others JUST FOR BEING THEMSELVES AND EXISTING

and where are all of you people when that happens?

    you just shut up

    you…

I would be equally pissed and worried and loud if someone else I knew personally were being threatened and attacked. If I had a blind Muslim transwoman bisexual Hispanic friend receiving death threats, I would react identically. Come on.

Okay I have mostly been ignoring the Laci Green thing, but this actually really bothers me.

Because minority peoples, oppressed peoples, even middle class white women if that is easier to swallow, get online death threats all the time. I don’t know if anyone’s been keeping up with the articles about women in the feminist blogosphere getting lots of really terrifying harassment do to their online work, or sometimes even just being a woman, and what’s really striking about all of it is that much of the commentary on it has been “Yep. This happens to me to,”  or people saying that it’s not a big deal, it’s the internet, people are mean, etc.  But there has been no big outcry over what has happened to a lot of these women, until the Anita Sarkeesian thing (sort of). Maybe because a lot of these people  didn’t leave. Maybe because they don’t do video series.

I follow a lot of PoC on tumblr, and various other activtis, and they will talk about some of the bullshit people send to them becaue of what they are doing and who they are. Why does no one jump in to defend them?  Why this one chick?

Is it the not knowing factor? How much of this defense of Laci Green is coming from people who actually know her, and are her real friends?

Also, when did we decide that the only reason you can be mad about injustice is if you know someone who’s being hurt? That is bullshit. This is just like when someone makes some sort of racist joke, and if you point it out they respond by saying “but you’re not a member of x race.” So fucking what? You don’t have to be a minority to know something’s racist, you don’t have to be a women to know something’s sexist, you know when something offensive has been said or done. When someone is getting fucking death threats on the internet, you shouldn’t have to know them personally to be mad about it, and to imply that that’s the only reason you would, is also bullshit.

I honestly haven’t given a shit about this whole to-do, because the only reason I knew it was getting any attention is because Laci is a popular white video blogger. Death threats are terrible, full stop. But I think it’s really telling to look at who gets defended and by whom, and who gets left to suffer in silence. There has been a lot written on online harassment of women. This is not new. It does not outrage me anymore, and at this point I find people’s surprise to be fairly ignorant. This is a disgusting, pervasive part of internet culture that I would dearly love to see banished, but, again, what I find most compelling about this, are which women are chosen to be the martyrs and why.  I’m not going to get into why the example of  having “a blind Muslim transwoman bisexual Hispanic friend” is actually offensive, but I do not believe for one second that if that friend was reviving death threats, she would receive a fraction of the support Laci Green has seen. Why? Because these people actually do exist outside of imagination, and they are not receiving support, not just in defense of their haters, but as people.

If nothing else comes out of this, I hope people start putting their money where their mouth is, and doing what they can to stop online harassment. I doubt it though.
